Our Pet Food

Why does CANIDAE offer a grain-free diet?

Our customers asked for all natural, holistic grain-free pet foods. We responded by consulting with our nutritionists and veterinarians to develop two new CANIDAE grain free formulas: CANIDAE Grain-Free Salmon and CANIDAE Grain-Free All Life Stages. These grain-free diets are formulated for dogs that do not tolerate grain well, are prone to dietary allergic reactions, and require a higher level of meat protein in their diets.

Traditionally, CANIDAE has offset the abundance of meat protein in its foods by including nutritious grains or starches. For many dogs this provides an optimal blend of protein, carbohydrates and fat. Some dogs however can benefit from a further increase in meat protein and a complete absence of grains of any kind. In these grain-free formulas, the carbohydrates are derived from sources like potatoes and peas instead of grains.

Our CANIDAE Grain-Free All Life Stages diet is an optimal blend of multiple meat sources. With a protein level of 34% and fat at 18% you will need to make sure your dog can tolerate that high a level of protein and adjust the intake to your dog's nutritional needs. Our CANIDAE Grain-Free Salmon diet yields a protein level of 40% with fat at 20%. Because Salmon yields such a high meat protein value and we utilize a low starch offset, this product is much higher in protein than our other formulas. We feel as though very sensitive dogs, higher stress dogs, and underweight dogs will benefit from our CANIDAE Grain-Free Salmon formula.

These grain-free foods may not be suitable for all dogs. It is always best to consult with your veterinarian before making a substantial change to your dog's diet.

Are your products safe?

Yes. Though we were not involved in any way with the recalls of contaminated pet food in 2005 and 2007 (or at any other time), we have substantially increased our testing procedures. To assure the safety of our products, CANIDAE has strict protocols which require that all formulas are tested in-line during our production runs and cleared by a second supervisor every 30 minutes. Additionally, there are 141 ingredient tests and 10 finished product tests that are performed. A sample of each finished goods batch is also sent directly to our research and development center where they are tested again, this time by a third party lab, for known toxins and potential risk hazards.

Please read our published Commitment to Pet Food Safety for detailed information.

Where can I find more information on the ingredients you use in your formulas?

The exact formulation for each of our pet foods is listed on the bag, can or box. The ingredients are also listed on each product's webpage. We also have an ingredients page link to The Finest Ingredients that discusses the benefits and sources for the ingredients we use.

Where can I buy CANIDAE and FELIDAE?

You can purchase online or at leading independent pet food retailers. View our Stockists page to find a local retailer near you.

How are CANIDAE and FELIDAE preserved?

CANIDAE pet foods are preserved with Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) and Vitamin C. We do not use anything artificial. CANIDAE pet foods are naturally preserved.

Why do ingredient definitions periodically change on pet food labels?

CANIDAE All Natural Pet Foods prides itself on following all of the AAFCO guidelines in all fifty states. In order to satisfy updated ingredient definitions, from year to year and from time to time the exact words used on pet food labels must be updated periodically to the new regulations.

Should I add vitamins or supplements to my pet food?

Normally, no. CANIDAE cat and dog foods are nutritionally complete. We continually consult with our veterinarians and pet nutritionists to formulate the healthiest foods possible. Our formulas meet or exceed the minimum requirements of the Nutrient Profiles set by AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials). If you do decide to include additional supplement or vitamins, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian.

Why can't I buy CANIDAE or FELIDAE in chain stores?

It?s been our philosophy and commitment to support Independent Pet Stores. Independent Pet Stores have been the heart and soul of the pet industry.

From the local corner pet shop to the large feed store, we all grew up with and loved to shop in Independent Pet Stores. Typically independent retailers are more knowledgeable with the products lines they carry, offer higher quality unique items, and are able to offer competitive pricing.

Please support your local independent retailers! To find one near you that carries CANIDAE and FELIDAE visit our Stockists page.

Do you condone inhumane testing on caged animals?

No. CANIDAE neither conducts nor condones any inhumane laboratory live animal testing. After many years of making pet food and over a million tons a month being fed without incident world wide, we have passed the real world test without harming or inhumanely caging a single dog or cat.

What is the difference between "Dry Matter" and "As Fed"?

Dry Matter is the value for a nutrient assuming all moisture is removed. Dry matter is mostly used by veterinarians because it yields specific information on a more uniform basis.

As Fed would be the value for a nutrient without removing the moisture.

"How to Transition Your Dog to a New Pet Food"

Why Transition When Changing Your Dog's Diet?

Your dog's digestive tract is sensitive and needs time to acclimate to changes in diet. At CANIDAE All Natural Pet Foods we recommend the following transition guidelines based on customer feedback, advise from veterinarians and our own experience with our family pets.

CANIDAE All Natural Dog Food contains more meat and less carbohydrates than most other brands. While a higher meat to carbohydrate ratio provides a healthier and more natural canine diet, those dogs who are used to eating a different diet will transition easier if the old food and new food are mixed together for a short time.

CANIDAE All Natural Dog Food is also more dense than most other brands because we use nutritionally dense meals, which originate from meats processed in a human grade facility, that are low in moisture and very high in pure protein. When cooked, these meat meals shrink much less than other protein sources. This results in a pet food that is denser and more nutritious than most other brands. Many dogs also find our food to be more palatable than other brands, so some will want to eat more.

An abrupt change to a different diet can cause some dogs to experience gastro-intestinal upset, for example, loose stools or vomiting. While this upset usually disappears in a matter of days, it can often be avoided by following these simple transition guidelines. Unlike humans, dogs often eat the same diet for months or years and their digestive systems are not as used to change as ours are.

How to Transition Your Dog's Diet

We have found that the smoothest transition from one dog food to another is to mix the foods together. This process should usually take about six days as outlined below, but you can increase the transition time if your dog is particularly sensitive.

Additional Tips for Food Transitioning

  • In most cases we realize transitioning slowly is not possible. In that case, feed smaller portions more regularly. We suggest breaking up the daily intake to 3 to 4 feedings per day. Adding warm water to the food will also decrease the chance of your dog eating too quickly and not chewing thoroughly. Gulping a highly palatable product could cause vomiting.
  • If at any time during the transition, your dog experiences gastro-intestinal upset, keep the ratio of new to old food the same for several days. This will allow your dog to adjust to the new ratio before you incorporate more of the new food. In the event you are not transitioning with your old food, withhold food for 1 day and then start re-introducing 3 to 4 feedings per day mixed with warm water. All other treats and supplements should be withheld until fully transitioned.
  • You may notice a change in the appearance of your dog's stool even after the transition period. This can often be a result of a change in the amount of fiber and protein in the new diet and is normal.

"Pet Food Safety"

Are your products safe?

Yes. Though we were not involved in any way with the recalls of contaminated pet food in 2005 and 2007 (or at any other time), we have substantially increased our testing procedures. To assure the safety of our products, CANIDAE has strict protocols which require that all formulas are tested in-line during our production runs and cleared by a second supervisor every 30 minutes. Please read our published Commitment to Pet Food Safety for detailed information.

Do you add gluten to any of your products?

No. We do not nor have we ever added glutens to our products. Glutens are a special protein naturally occurring in many carbohydrates. The most commonly used gluten and of highest concern is wheat. Glutens can also be processed out of carbohydrates yielding a high protein ingredient.

Does CANIDAE use Ethoxyquin as a preservative?

None of CANIDAE?s products are formulated with the use of ethoxyquin as a preservative, nor are they produced with Ethoxyquin. We pay high premiums for all our ingredients assuring only the best are used. The truth about CANIDAE is CANIDAE has always preserved its products naturally. We continue testing to assure our standards of excellence and commitment to meet or exceed the natural pet food category's finished goods test results.

I read something on the Internet about CANIDAE products that concerned me. Should I be worried?

We are aware of a few websites, mostly discussion forums, that contain negative comments about our food. We encourage our customers to contact us directly if they have a concern so that we can answer any questions and follow up if necessary. At CANIDAE, we are committed to providing you, our valued customer, and your pets the highest standard of excellence for product quality, palatability, and customer satisfaction. Please remember, we are all pet parents ourselves at CANIDAE and feed our own beloved cats and dogs the same food that you do.

"Pet Nutrition"

Questions about Pet Food Safety

Do you offer products for older or overweight dogs and cats?

Yes. We offer our CANIDAE PLATINUM? and FELIDAE PLATINUM? lines specially formulated for a lower calorie, nutritious diet.

Is it safe to switch between pet food products/flavors?

It is safe to change flavours or products.

However, remember to introduce a new product gradually over a 7-10 day period. Sudden changes in a pet's diet can cause intestinal upsets, more so in dogs than in cats. Also, constant changes can create a finicky eater. Please see our dog food transitioning guidelines for information on how to best transition your pet to a new diet.

How much water should my dog or cat drink each day?

Your pet should always have fresh clean water available to drink as he/she pleases.

Questions about Proper Colon Health

When switching pet food to a brand such as CANIDAE and loose stool occurs, is there reason for alarm?

No. It is not uncommon for pet owners to report their dogs have softer stool on CANIDAE foods after feeding other products. That is because all CANIDAE diets are designed to optimize gastrointestinal health through the deliberate selection of dietary fibres. These fibres, both soluble and insoluble, promote healthy fermentation in the large intestine (colon) which makes elimination easier.

Stools may have a different odour (less offensive) and hold more water than before. The elevated water holding capacity of some fibres results in this softer stool. It is not a cause for alarm, but rather an indication that the food is working to promote a healthy gastrointestinal tract.

Occasionally dogs get diarrhoea. Does this mean something is wrong with the food?

Although the food is the most tangible and easiest to blame, it usually is not the food that causes diarrhoea.

Sometimes, the introduction of a new diet can lead to vomiting (usually from over-eating), but seldom does a extruded food lead to sudden episodes of diarrhoea. Sudden and dramatic bouts of diarrhoea are almost always caused by the ingestion of pathogenic micro-organisms such as clostridium perfringens, salmonella, or e. coli.

These organisms are found in the soil, on spoiled foods (garbage), or carried by other animals (e.g., rodents, birds, insects). If your pet has diarrhoea, make sure it has access to plenty of fresh water to replace the lost moisture. If the diarrhoea persists for more than a day, consult your veterinarian as it may be a sign of a pathogenic infection. If the stool contains blood, consult your veterinarian immediately.

What is the ideal healthy stool for a dog?

The nutritional ideal and the preference of pet owners may not be the same. From a nutritional perspective, stool should be regular (the same number of daily bowel movements), easily eliminated, consistent from beginning to end, and not accompanied by gassiness or mucus.

Pet owners often prefer a stool that is small, dry and easy to handle. When formulating a super premium pet food, the goal is to find a middle-ground that does not compromise the health of the pet.

How does CANIDAE protect the gastrointestinal health of my dog?

CANIDAE pet foods are formulated with a careful selection of fiber containing ingredients. These include fruits, vegetables, rice bran, tomato pomace, dried peas, and inulin (from chicory root). These nutritious ingredients contribute insoluble fiber for bulk and water binding properties, and soluble fiber to promote beneficial fermentation in the colon.

Selecting just the right combination of ingredients and fiber types aids in normal passage and elimination and keeps the delicate tissues of the digestive tract healthy.

Questions About Pet Food Allergies, Contributed by Dr. Melissa Brookshire, DVM

How Common Are Pet Food Allergies?

Many people think that their pets have allergies to their food, but science tells us that food allergies are much less likely to be causing your pet's skin problems than other ailments. Did you know that food allergies are the least common type of allergy diagnosed in dogs and cats and make up only about 5% of ALL cases of skin disease seen by veterinarians? So, if 100 dogs came into the vet clinic with itchy skin, only 5 of those dogs would be itchy because of a food allergy.

My pet?s food changed and now he is itchy. Does he have a food allergy?

A common myth about food allergies is that they develop when the food is changed. This is the opposite of how an allergy develops. Food allergy takes time and many pets have been eating the offending food for years.

My puppy has itchy skin and is losing hair around his eyes and mouth. Is he allergic to his food?

The most likely cause of these symptoms is Demodectic mange. This can be diagnosed and treated by your veterinarian. However, about 1/3 of confirmed food allergy cases (in dogs) are in pups younger than one year of age. This tells us that these dogs have a genetic component to their allergy. Adult dogs with food allergies should not be bred, as they might pass the allergy on to their offspring.

My five year old dog has had one ear infection in the past two years and now he is sneezing occasionally. Does he have food allergies?

What does a food allergy look like? In cats, the symptoms are typically scabs and itching around the face and neck. Ear mites are a common ailment of kittens that will also cause itchy head and neck, so it is important to have your veterinarian do a thorough check of your cat?s ears. Dogs with food allergies are most itchy around their face, belly and feet. They also will have recurrent ear infections. These dogs are even more itchy than dogs with other types of allergies, often scratching or rubbing their skin to the point that it is raw and inflamed.

Every spring my dog starts scratching his ears and rubbing his body on the rugs. Does he have a food allergy?

Food allergies are not seasonal. The most common types of allergies are flea allergy and atopy (inhaled allergy). Spring is the time of year when both of these types of allergies tend to flare up. Keeping up with flea control is critical to protect pets from flea allergy dermatitis. Just because a diagnosis is made of flea allergy does not mean that the pet is infested with fleas.

Flea allergy tends to be very strong and a dog or cat can become very itchy even after being bitten by a single flea. Interesting fact: Dogs with flea allergies may have allergies to foods as well. If the fleas are completely controlled though, the food allergy symptoms may never appear. If the fleas are not controlled, the dog might show flea allergy dermatitis and evidence of food allergy together.

"Why Use 'All Life Stages'?"

At CANIDAE Pet Foods we have created our All Life Stage Formulas for your dogs called CANIDAE, and our All Life Stage Formulas for your cats called FELIDAE. These formulas are true, All Natural, All Life Stages, feral type diets that provide optimum nutrition for the ones you love.

In nature your pets couldn't choose between a puppy, kitten, or light formulation, only a diet of mainly meats and small amounts of grain. They simply eat more or less, depending on age and activity levels. CANIDAE and FELIDAE both contain more than 50% of high quality meat proteins. We have also included digestive enzymes that closely resemble those found in nature.

Puppies will require a higher caloric and calcium phosphorous intake than an adult dog would, therefore we suggest feeding twice as much to puppies up to 6 months of age. Our standard recommended feeding guidelines for an adult dog is 1 cup for every 25lbs of body weight. You can be assured with 468 kcal per cup, your puppy will be getting more than most standard puppy foods on the market. Our beliefs are the same for your felines as well. With FELIDAE we offer 521 kcal per cup with a recommended feeding guideline of 1/4 cup per 5lbs of body weight. We have found that free choice feedings work out best for kittens and nursing queens.

You can be assured your Adult dogs and cats are getting the best they deserve with our feral type diets which contain: Four Antibiotic and Hormone free meats as the main ingredients which also includes whole grain rice, balanced Omega Fatty Acids, probiotics, digestive enzymes, antioxidant vitamins, chelated minerals, and a total of 10 natural skin and coat conditioners. All of this without the use of allergic irritating corn, wheat, soy, or other cheap grain fractions or fillers. Just the perfect diet for your canines or felines.

Over Weight dogs and cats don?t deserve lower quality ingredients to lose weight like; beet pulp, hulls, flours, or any other low quality fillers. They simply need your help in providing them with the proper amount of high quality CANIDAE or FELIDAE. Feeding at least twice a day and approximately 50% less than our standard recommended feeding guidelines will yield the results you are looking for. Exercise will not only help improve the health of your pets, but will bring you closer to your loved ones!

Senior dogs and cats require smaller quantities of a more efficient food, like CANIDAE and FELIDAE, not excessive amounts of low cost undigestible fillers and fibers. Senior dogs and cats intestines become less efficient with age and are less able to digest and absorb, therefore feeding low quality fibers and fats are an extreme disservice as well. CANIDAE and FELIDAE include probiotics, digestive enzymes, and chelated minerals for better absorption and utilization of meats, carbohydrates, and fats.

Senior/Overweight In the event reducing volume intake isn?t something you?re interested in for your pets, we have created the perfect Senior/Overweight formula designed especially for you and your pet. CANIDAE PLATINUM for your dogs and FELIDAE PLATINUM for your cats. Both formulas are lower in protein and fat, lower in calories, yet designed with optimum calcium/phosphorous ratios, skin and coat conditioners, and contain glucosimine and chondroitin, all packed into a meat based food.

Breeding and Working dogs require higher calories without excessive volume. Breeders can also enjoy the fact they are doing the absolute best for their dogs and cats with only purchasing one formula for their kennel. At whelping, the food in the bitch or queen is what produced the high nutrient milk, therefore there will be no digestive troubles when the food is introduced to the puppies and kittens. Working dogs will require a higher caloric intake, therefore increasing the amount of food consumed will offer superb performance.

"Meat vs Meal"

Meat vs. Meal on Pet Food Labeling. What is the difference and what does it mean to your pets and you?

All Natural CANIDAE PLATINUM® for dogs and FELIDAE PLATINUM® for cats have been specifically formulated to meet the special dietary needs of your pets as they age.

Meat Fact: Chicken & Lamb are 70% water and only 12% protein.

Pet food labels found in grocery and mass marketers like to use Chicken or Lamb to represent real meat. When used without the addition of meat meals, these protein sources contain 70% moisture, much of which is lost during cooking. The label leads the consumer to believe that the product is mostly meat based when it may not be. Chicken or lamb meats are heavier than grains prior to cooking, but not after. Although the inclusion of fresh meats may be beneficial, the moisture contained in the meats (70%) is reduced by two-thirds during the cooking process, possibly leaving the total formula as a grain based food after processing.

Meal Fact: Chicken Meal and Lamb Meal are dry and 70% to 65% meat protein!

Example: CANIDAE All Life Stages lists Chicken Meal & Turkey Meal as the first ingredients. Chicken, Turkey and Lamb meals are nearly dry (5% moisture content) and contain 70% to 65% meat proteins. During cooking, the meat meals do not shrink below the grain weight, producing a true meat based formula for your pets. See the table below.

Meat vs. Meal - Where should it really end up in the ingredient panel?
  • Ingredients are listed on pet food packaging in order of predominance BEFORE they are cooked.
  • Meat Meal is highly concentrated meat that is dehydrated, containing 5% moisture and 70% protein.
  • Meat is wet, containing 70% water and only 12% protein.
  • When meat is cooked in the extrusion process, the moisture is removed, resulting in a very small percentage of the total makeup of the finished pet food.
  • When meat meal is cooked in the extrusion process, it is not diminished, resulting in a much larger makeup of the finished pet food.
  • Although meat has its benefits, it really shouldn?t be the only animal protein source available for your pets as you would wind up with a grain based pet food.
